The Life of Antoine Laurent Lavoisier: invaluable contribution to the advancement of science

A father of modern chemistry, a pioneer in biological science, bright financier and economist, prominent public figure and historian all of these are referred to one remarkable individual whose name is Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier.

He was born on August 26, 1743, in Paris in a rich bourgeois family. At the age of 11, he entered the Collège Mazarin to study the humanities and sciences where demonstrated unusual studiousness and interest to many disciplines. There he first encountered with the astronomy and enthusiastically studied meteorological phenomena throughout the entire life. After college, he studied law and in parallel attended public and private lectures on chemistry and physics. His agile mind and curiosity never let him sit idly. In 1764 he successfully completed his first paper on the chemical and physical properties of gypsum.

Despite a high position in the elite Order of Barristers, in 1768 Antoine-Laurent started his research and administrative career in the Academy of Sciences and other public agencies. A skilful financier and excellent manager he invested in a private tax company Ferme Générale and achieved much success in this area. In 1771 he married a 14-year-old lady Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze. She became his true assistant, devoting all her time to translating English science journals, recording and drawing the results of scientific experiments, promoting his findings and inventions to the public.

Chemistry and further physiology were real top-priority passion in his ever-busy life. Among his fundamental findings are a new system of chemical nomenclature; the oxygen theory of combustion; carrying out the reactions in chemical equations that respect the conservation of mass; research on weight gains and losses in calcination; an ice calorimeter apparatus to measure the amount of heat during combustion or respiration; pioneer works on the body metabolism and others.

An imminent collapse of Lavoisier’s scientific and public activities came with the Revolution, in 1791. Like many other scientists Lavoisier followed the liberal position, however, advocated for the right of the Academy of Sciences and offered some economic and educational reforms. Being arrested together with the former tax gatherers, he was charged with treason against the State and embezzlement of State property. On May 8, 1794, he was guillotined.
