Feminine Sexuality and Passion in Kate Chopin's The Storm

This short story written by Kate Chopin deals with adultery and themes relevant to it. Basically, The Storm is about the early 1900’s, and it tells readers more about 2 key characters, Alcee and Calixta. The first one must stay in her house because of a storm, but they end up making love while her husband and child are waiting in a local shop. This is how the author implies such themes as sexuality and passion in addition to adultery. Besides, Kate Chopin wants to say that adultery is not always bad and results in harsh consequences.

The Key Features of Its Plot

Throughout this story, you can notice the constant changes of imagery, and they play an important role in characters’ development and their abilities to demonstrate the main theme. It’s worth mentioning that Alcee is the former lover of Calixta, and the author tries to demonstrate that she still has some feelings for him. Calixta has no problems with the fact that she’s cheating her husband because of her passion and feminine sexuality.

Once they finish making love, the author’s descriptions and imagery change again to signify readers about a certain thing. The rain stops and characters can see the sun, and this is what signifies that everything will be fine in their lives. This fact is also proven by the attitudes of Alcee and Calixta because they both have smiles on their faces when he leaves her house. When her family comes home, she is glad to see them and continues her usual life. It’s another sign that indicates that her adultery was normal to her. When it comes to Alcee, he gets home and writes his wife a standard letter without mentioning anything.

In Summary

As the main plot of The Storm comes to an end, readers can clearly see how Kate Chopin implies that adultery is not always bad and has negative consequences for people. She uses brilliant imagery as the key writing element to deliver this theme to the targeted audience. The author also uses changes in her descriptions of different scenes in addition to certain alterations in the development of important characters.

To make your own conclusions about this subject, you shouldn’t hesitate to read the Storm by Kate Chopin once or twice. There is always some room for discussions and arguments, but this point of view has the right to be considered and described in literary works, such as this one. If you have anything to add to the main theme, you can try writing your analysis or other brief papers to describe your personal opinion.
