A Glimpse of the Nazi Concentration Camps

Concentration camp is a place for seclusion of real or imagined enemies of the state, political regime, etc. Unlike prisons and ordinary camps for prisoners of war and refugees, concentration camps were established by special decree of the war, an exacerbation of the political struggle.

In Nazi Germany concentration camps were a tool of mass state terror and genocide. Despite the fact that the term ‘concentration camp’ was applied to all the Nazi camps, in reality, there are several types of camps and a concentration camp was just one of them.

Other types of camps included labor camps and intensive labor camps, extermination camps, transit camps, and camps for prisoners of war.

Concentration camps in Nazi Germany were established after the arrival of the Nazis to power for the purpose of isolation and repression of opponents of the Nazi regime. The first concentration camp in Germany was established in March 1933 near Dachau.

By the beginning of World War II, prisons and concentration camps in Germany had 300,000 German, Austrian and Czech anti-fascists. In later years, Hitler’s Germany in the territory of the occupied European countries created a huge network of concentration camps that were turned into places of organized and systematic murder of millions of people.

The Nazi concentration camps were used for the physical destruction of entire nations, primarily Slavic; total extermination of Jews and Gypsies.

Buchenwald is one of the largest Nazi concentration camps. It was established in 1937 near the town of Weimar (Germany). Originally it was called the Ettersberg. The camp had 66 branches and external project teams. From 1937 to 1945, prisoners of the camp were about 239,000 people. In total, in Buchenwald 56 thousand 56 thousand people of 18 nationalities were tortured.

The camp was liberated on April 10, 1945. In 1958, a memorial complex dedicated to victims of Buchenwald was established.

Oswiecim, also known under the German name of Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau, was a complex of German concentration camps, situated from 1940 till 1945 in southern Poland 60 km west of Krakow. The complex consisted of three main camps. At Auschwitz more than 4 million people were killed, among them more than 1.2 million Jews, 140 thousand Poles, 20 thousand Gypsies, 10 thousand Soviet prisoners of war and tens of thousands of prisoners of other nationalities.

On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz. In 1947, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum was opened in Oswiecim (Auschwitz-Birkenau).
