Sleep Disorder that Causes Sleep Deprivation

Each of us knows what it means not to have enough sleep. It leads to being sleepy during the day, lethargy, and even poor health. The next night, in order to feel better, you will need to sleep for a longer period of time. The human body itself compensates for the lack of sleep at night by getting more sleep next night.

What happens if you regularly lack enough sleep? There is no compensation for the lack of sleep and people start suffering from nervous system disorders and neurotic states. Nerve processes, having lost the normal force and getting weak, for an extended period of time are delayed in some parts of the brain, forming static excitation. In the brain, excitatory processes begin to dominate over inhibitory processes. The result is insomnia. A person suffering from insomnia wants to sleep, but, despite the efforts, the he or she can’t sleep.

Insomnia is a form of sleep disorder. Sleep disorders may also include increased sleepiness, the so-called hypersomnia. The systematic lack of sleep makes a person sleepy. In contrast to insomnia increased pathological somnolence leads to long sleeps, which often is a consequence of inflammatory diseases in brain, such as viral encephalitis. In these cases, sleeps can last even for a week, and months, and even, in rare cases, years.

Pathological drowsiness often occurs in people who have suffered such serious infectious diseases such as typhus, meningitis, or influenza. Drowsiness also can occur when a person suffers anemia and functional disorders of the nervous system.

Insomnia, unlike the increased sleepiness, is more common. A significant number of people suffer from insomnia. There are numerous causes of sleep disorders. Sleep disorders can be caused by complex environmental factors. These include auditory and visual stimuli, temperature and climatic changes. Sleep disorders can also be caused by pain stimuli depending on their intensity and duration.

Sleep disorders may be accompanied by various diseases. These include functional disorders of the nervous system associated with severe mental, emotional trauma, neurosis, psychosis, organic brain diseases (especially atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels), diseases of the internal organs and endocrine glands (kidney, liver, thyroid). Sleep disorders can also be caused by diseases of the respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive systems. The causes of sleep disorders leave imprint on the character of their manifestation. Sleep disorders are subdivided into three basic forms: difficulty falling asleep, shallow, restless sleep with frequent awakenings and early final awakenings.
