Katherine Anne Porter’s The Jilting of Granny Weatherall

The main character in the story is mostly based on Porter’s grandmother. The story addresses grave illness and religious belief, subjects of which Porter had personal knowledge.

One of the main themes in the story is the usefulness of denial. Granny Weatherhall is a woman, who deeply denies the basic truths about her character and her life. She doesn’t want to believe that she is dying and she still loves the man, who jilted her at the altar. The story starts with her persistence that Doctor Harry should watch someone, who is actually ill. Granny tells herself that she had a good life with John and completely forgot about George. Of course, her continuous talks about George make it obvious that she hasn’t forgotten about him, but she can’t admit it. She also doesn’t see that she treats Cornelia badly and won’t admit that she regrets some aspects of her life. Her state of denial is a handicap and a necessity. Granny’s state of denial imposes hardships on those around her. It is clear that children suffered from her and they never got a satisfaction of an apology. At the same time, Granny’s sense of denial is something that helped her went through her life.

The main motif of the story is waste. Granny’s fear of wasting food suggests her fear of wasting life. She warns about losing things. These commands are practical in a way, as Granny had to support the whole family on that little money she had. And she managed to take care of everyone using everything she can. The commands also demonstrate Granny’s nervousness about spending wastefully life itself. She seems to worry that she had wasted her life and she doesn’t want the children to waste theirs. Then Granny thought about the wedding cake that had to be thrown away when George stood her up at the altar. The anxiety over this uneaten food suggests her sadness over wasting. On some level, Granny fears because she lost her true love, the life she was living was a waste.

The blue color in the story symbolizes the stages of Granny’s life. It is first introduced when Granny remembers her days of running a tidy household. She visualizes the white jars with blue letters on them, which symbolizes the time, when Granny’s energy made it possible for her to act a head of the household.

Blue comes back when Granny recalls the way her children watched her light the lamps at night. This symbolizes the transitional moment in her life, when Granny’s children didn’t need any more and went off to the world on their own.

In the end of the story, as Granny lies in bed, she thinks how foolish the lampshades look, turning the light blue. This time the color suggests the point in Granny’s life, when the world has passed by her.
