The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Luxury, entertainment, economic boom, the pursuit of the pleasures of life, the eternal carnival – time, called by Fitzgerald Age of Jazz, with its values and precedencies owned the minds of a whole generation of young men and women. We can see the feverish atmosphere of fun, lack of any kind of responsibility and a hint of the external preservation of moral values. That is the time, reflected in the novel “The Great Gatsby.”

“The Great Gatsby” is certainly one of the central works of the entire American literature of the 20th century, which may give the most profound revelation of magnificence and destruction of the American Dream. The novel’s theme is closely linked to an essential component of the American Dream that is riches. Gatsby throws grand parties. During a tour of the house, arranged for Daisy, the narrator notices a lot of luxury goods in the house of the protagonist. Jay Gatsby’s car strikes the reader’s imagination, while his suits are always perfect. But does the wealth that seemingly gives a person everything introduces Gatsby in the society, a member of which he so desperately wants to be?

According to many critics, the history of evolution and collapse of Gatsby’s dream is the story of his futile and tragic attempts to join the standard of living of the rich Americans. Gatsby could not enter this circle, which was for him meant only Daisy. The fact is that, despite the acquired wealth, for the real rich people he will forever remain a mere swindler. Daisy is not just refusing him, she understands that, because for her this world is native, and she was not ready to leave it.

Jay Gatsby in the context of the “American Dream” is not just a hero – he is an ideal role model. But the American dream is falling apart before our eyes. Gatsby is immensely rich, influential, and good-looking – only this is not enough, even in America. Hundreds of guests visit his parties and spread gossips behind his back. And it is not that they are jealous of his wealth. They do not know anything about his past, and therefore they do not trust him.

Gatsby does not trust himself either. When he goes out at night from his home and looks at the opposite shore of the bay, stretching out his hands, he runs not to the woman he once knew and which still loves, but to the past, which was not there. The symbolic meaning of his love is clear: he is in love with the one on the other bank, he is afraid that she’ll reject him, for her sake he gets richer and arranges parties, he loves not only her, but the memory of the past, associated with her, the past, which was taken away from him.
