The Night Char Study

The action of a book combined into a trilogy takes place on three continents: in Nazi-occupied Europe, in Palestine, 1947, and in the US in the end of the fifties. The unity of the book can be seen at the semantic level. Like the author, the characters of the book have survived the Nazi genocide, and the trilogy can be considered as an experience of Elie Wiesel’s spiritual autobiography.

Night is the first part of the trilogy – the only Wiesel’s work, which can be regarded as purely autobiographical. And it is the only work of his more than thirty books, which he wrote directly about the Holocaust, the genocide of European Jewry. As the reader will learn, in spring 1944 Wiesel, his parents and three sisters were deported – together with all Sigot Jews – in Auschwitz. Wiesel’s mother Sarah and his younger sister Zippori died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. His father, Shlomo Wiesel, died of exhaustion and dysentery in Buchenwald in early spring 1945.

On April 11, 1945 Buchenwald was liberated by the Americans, and then the wandering began for sixteen year-old Elie and other Jews.

By the end of the war a world in which Eliezer spent his childhood, the world of Eastern European Jewry, didn’t exist. Those who by chance survived the extermination camps, had nowhere to return to.

In 1945, Wiesel was among four hundred orphans of Buchenwald, which by the decision of General de Gaulle were taken by France. The way to Palestine was closed by British authorities. In the years 1948-1951 Wiesel studied literature, philosophy and psychology at the Sorbonne, as well as the French language, on which are written almost all of his work and on which he still writes.

One of the important aspects of Night is the change in Eliezer’s father-son relationship as well as other father-son relationships. The book describes a lot how people can change in harsh environments. The concentration camp changes a lot in father-son relationship. Eliezer remained close to his father almost his whole stay in concentration camps. The two of them were very devoted to each other and looked after each other.

Among the other characters of Night are Moche the Baedle, Eliezer’s mother, Tzipora, Martha, Madame Schaechter, Dr. Mengele, Stein of Antwerp, and others.

Moche the Baedle is a poor man who works at the synagogue. He helped Eliezer to study cabbala. Moche was deported to Nazi concentration camps because he was a foreigner. He managed to escape and tried to warn the people of the horrors of the Holocaust.

Eliezer was separated from his mother and his seven-year-old sister Tzipora, when he arrived at Birkenau. They both died in the concentration camp.
