The Key Characteristics of the Tragedy of Macbeth

The well-known literary works of Shakespeare are characterized by the role played by tragic heroes, and Macbeth is no different because it’s a classic example. There are many factors that contribute to that, but the first thing that you should do when reviewing this book is learning more about the main characteristics of tragic heroes.

Why Macbeth Is a Tragic Hero

Basically, tragic heroes are figures with a high stature and a noble background, and they are good, but have to suffer because of the flaws of their characters or personalities. Most of the ones depicted by Shakespeare lose their lives in the end, and when it comes to his Macbeth, its main figure is seen by most people as a tragic hero for different reasons.

For example, this character has a great stature because of a significant political importance and moving up in nobility ranks. Keep in mind that other country leaders always speak about him well, thus proving that Macbeth is an honorable and respectable man. However, his blind ambitions and wife’s words lead him to a bloody and violent path. This is how he follows a tragic hero’s format and suffers from a tragic flaw.

His Character and Its Flaws

Macbeth has a number of flaws, and the basic one is his ambition to become a king. When witches told him that he could have a bright future, it seems like his honorable nature starts fading, and it was replaced by something worse. His wish to get more power and the words of his wife results in murdering Duncan while sleeping. Macbeth suffered from extreme paranoia because he was afraid of everyone who had a noble bloodline. He killed 4 people trying to protect his kingship so that his ambitions lead to this destructive path and becoming a tyrant instead of being a noble king. Another important characteristic that should be mentioned is that Macbeth has an impressionable nature that made him listen to others, including his wife. This tragic flaw played an important role in his destiny.

In conclusion, there are different characteristics relevant to the tragedy of Macbeth, and they all are important to see when reading his story written by Shakespeare. The good news is that you may have your personal understanding of them, so don’t be afraid to express them in your own words. Macbeth fits all the characteristics of tragic heroes because readers see his full cycle of rising to power and great demise because of his ambitions that lead to an ultimate downfall and death.
