The Issue with Urban Sprawl

One of the most pressing global issues of our time is the process of urban sprawl.

Urbanization is the historical process of increasing the role of cities in the development of societies, which includes changes in the distribution of productive forces, especially in the resettlement of the population, its demographic, social and professional structure, lifestyle and culture.

Cities have existed in ancient times: Thebes on the territory of modern Egypt was the largest city in the world back in 1300 BC. The process of urbanization as a planetary phenomenon was a product of industrialization and capitalism. Even in 1800, only about 3% of the world population lived in cities, while today this number is about 50%.

According to the degree of urbanization in Europe, the UK (90%), Sweden, Germany and some other countries (over 80%), while in North America – the United States and Canada (80%).

Cities sometimes grow into metropolitan areas, absorbing the suburbs and forming zones of continuous buildings that are functionally linked to the city nucleus.

Urban agglomerations have now become the main form of resettlement in industrialized countries. The urbanization generates the most complicated knot of contradictions, the totality of which serves as a strong argument for considering it from the perspective of global studies. You can highlight the economic, environmental, social and territorial aspects.

The economic aspect is that urbanization causes traffic jams, water supply problems, and environmental problems. In this regard, the industry had to move from the big cities, and its place is occupied by other functions.

Environmental problems of cities concentrate all kinds of pollution, providing direct and indirect impact on the vast territory.

The social aspect of urbanization is manifested in the sharp differences in the quality of life in towns and distressed peripheral areas of many developed countries, the social contrasts within the major cities.

The spatial aspect of urbanization is associated with all the ones mentioned above. Urban sprawl means the spread of urban life on large territories, and this in turn leads to the aggravation of environmental problems, the growing traffic flows, marginalization of the agricultural and reaction zones.

Globalism of urbanization is particularly obvious in developing countries. Urbanization in such countries leads to rapid growth of pseudo-urban population. Millions of people move to cities by landlessness and lack of job opportunities in rural areas.
