The Result of Civil Disobedience

Interested in the Civil Disobedience and its results? Then you should know that it was launched by the Lahore Congress in 1929. Gandhi had his full power to start this movement and his ultimatum was given to Lord Irwin a bit later, but it was ignored when this kind of disobedience was launched.

The Main Causes of the Civil Disobedience

Basically, the Congress declared that its main goal would be Purana Swaraj if the government didn’t accept the constitution based on a dominion status that year. Lord Irwin had a meeting with the Prime Minister, and then he went back to India and declared that the key object of the UK was granting this country its dominion status. However, he failed to deliver his promises under the pressure of conservative leaders. When he met Gandhi, Lord Irwin refused to make commitment about this kind of status at all, and that’s why India started to get ready to fight for its Purana Swaraj.

If to believe Amales Tripathy the basic cause of this movement was the world’s economic depression. It’s worth mentioning that the new leaders of the Congress were impatient for it, and revolutionaries weren’t sitting idle. That’s because the organization of peasants and works gathered a lot of strength for the leadership of communists. You should understand that all of these important events led Gandhi to realize the necessity to launch this type of movement in India, and it started with his historic Dandi March. He walked many miles through Gujarat villages and reached Dandi, and then Gandhi inaugurated this movement by taking up salt. Unfortunately, its result was the arrest of all Civil Disobedience leaders, including Gandhi, and this is what led to mass demonstrations.

The Basic Effects of This Movement

Keep in mind that the Civil Disobedience continued in many provinces in a variety of forms, and the main focus was on boycotting all foreign goods. There is one no-tax campaign that became quite popular in India, and government laws were defied by reading books banned by the local government. Besides, the defiance of foreign laws assumed mass demonstrations in Maharashtra. It’s true that this kind of movement took a fire in different provinces in the end, but you shouldn’t overlook the repressive measures of the government because they were quite severe. For example, many people were arrested and a few of them were even kills in detention camps. The Congress decided to withdraw it according to Gandhi’s wish in 1934.
