The Biography of John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones was a well-known and talented American naval hero who became famous in the American Revolution. He was popular for his victory over British ships, and he was the real captain of his ship because John ruled by authority, skill, and personality. There were specific concerns, including rigging, navigation ordnance, and internal discipline. Jones was quite a proud man, intellectual, slight, alert, wiry, and tough.

Basically, Jones was a great naval commander and a founder of the naval tradition of America. He was born in the family of an estate gardener, and he had Scottish origins. When John was only thirteen years old, he started his naval career after being introduced to a ship owner. It’s no wonder he had been to many countries and became a commander when he was 21.

Jones was on his way to success, but sailors attacked him in 1773, and he killed one of them so that he had to escape to America during its conflict with Britain because of taxes and self-governing. John was quite sympathetic to the quest for liberty of this country, and that’s why he decided to participate in the war a few years later.

America started this war without any naval power at all so that merchant ships were converted into the ones of war. Jones’s experience helped him succeed, and he took command of his new ship in 1776. He captured sixteen British ships only on one cruise, but soon he had more prizes. For example, he had a plan to attack Whitehaven, and this is what made Britain think that the Navy of America was powerful.

The greatest victory of Jones was in 1779 when he commanded a fleet of 5 ships and his main one was a converted merchant ship. He knew that rich British ships would return to Britain soon so that he planned to take at least a few of them. John decided to tie 2 ships together after a few hours of maneuvering so that they couldn’t fire into one another. When he was asked if he was ready to surrender, Jones answered that he hadn’t started to fight. It’s interesting that the British ship had to surrender in the end, but his main ship was ruined.

It’s true that his resourcefulness and courage in this fight and others helped him win international recognition. However, plans to give him a new big ship never materialized. John urged the government to keep the navy strong because it was the most effective guarantee against possible conflicts. Jones died in France in 1792 because of serious health problems when he was only 45 years old, but his tomb is in the US now.
