The Crisis Narrative Essay Basics

Before crafting The Crisis narrative paper, you should understand that it’s focused on a series of essays written by Thomas Paine. This author was called as an ingenious and valuable young man by Benjamin Franklin. He was emerged in the American Revolution as a talented propagandist of liberty.

His first Crisis narrative appeared in 1776 when Washington’s forces were retreated from Fort Lee into Pennsylvania. Basically, there were many people who believed that existed conditions were quite bad so that the army of Washington could be destroyed and liquidated, thus ending this revolution for the Liberty of America.

Thomas Paine joined the Continental Army as a simple civilian aide so that he was free to hang around among officers and others during a retreat. This is what made him well aware of the entire situation for the nation. Despite these hard times, the US military situation got another unfortunate blow by the Conway Cabal’s plotting that threatened to remove Washington from his post of chief commander and place the whole army under General Gates’s direction. This is when Thomas Paine became the first great propagandist of America and entered this struggle as a talented writer who wanted to defend Washington’s honor and advance the main causes of Revolution among more people.

One of his best-known Crisis pamphlets appeared the same year and it was titled Common Sense. Pay attention to his writing style and characteristics because it’s easy to compare them to the ones of Marx and Rousseau. That’s because Paine could easily electrify the targeted audience with his written words.

Besides, he got a true gift of using specific key phrases and words that had a magnetic effect on all readers so that they were never forgotten by people. When the US faced a crisis of WWII, state leaders turned to his words to express important ideas. The first opening sentences of The Crisis can offer the perfect examples of his ability to use catch words in the most effective way possible.

Thomas Paine made the light of British successes in his effort to boost the sagging morale of citizens. He also declared that Howe was ravaging the countryside and wasn’t a successful invader at all. He thought that Washington’s withdrawal is a strategic retreat and a promise of future winnings instead of a true disaster. Paine was positive that a final victory could be achieved with enough effort. Finally, he defined Tories as cowards who were slavish and servile.
