The Ideology of Ralph Waldo Emerson

19th century American literature boasts a great many fine writers and poets. One of them is a great American philosopher and poet – Ralph Waldo Emerson, who in the work “Nature” expressed and formulated a philosophy of transcendentalism.

Transcendentalism is an idealistic philosophy, proclaimed the primacy of the spiritual over the material. This feature emphasizes the two basic elements of direction – a heightened spiritual awareness and an interest in various forms of philosophical idealism.

Transcendentalism was a free association of writers, preachers and professors connected with each other with mutual dislike of Unitarian orthodoxy, a desire to liberate American culture and spiritual life of the dominance of the past, and a common belief in the unlimited possibilities of American democracy.

It is believed that the most important representative of transcendentalism was Emerson, and the whole movement came together with the appearance of his book “Nature”. Over the next two decades, new works of Emerson, including poems, essays and books of other representatives of the movement appeared. These people united in an informal discussion group and called it the Transcendental Club.

All participants of this movement can be characterized by one thing: almost all of them are the heirs of Unitarianism. This, probably more than anything else, explains the emergence of transcendentalism and its increasing importance for American culture. Transcendentalists broke off with Unitarianism for two reasons. First, they were against the Unitarian commitment to a certain characteristics of Christian history and dogma. Emerson called this commitment disastrous exaggeration. Second of all, transcendentalists were depressed with infertility of faith and worship in the Unitarian Church.

Transcendentalism was trying to re-instill ardent Puritan spirit to the American consciousness. Transcendentalists were the first to protest against civil religion in America. Their hopes have not come true – many of them expected to complete degeneration of the American public and spiritual life based on the principles of idealism. Nevertheless, transcendentalism has long influenced the minds. Before the Civil War, many transcendentalists were actively involved in the abolitionist movement, and in the decades that followed their protest against modern society inspired various movements and individuals.
