The 99th Session of Congress

Watergate affair is the proceedings of illegal actions of several individuals in connection with an attempt to install listening devices in the Democratic Party headquarters in Washington, DC during the 1972 election campaign.

On June 17, 1972, four months before the US presidential election, at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee a few people who were establishing the bugs were caught.

Investigation of the case was assigned to a specially created group of the FBI, whose leadership was entrusted to the Deputy FBI Director Mark Felt. The investigation lasted more than two years. Journalists from the newspaper The Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein wrote regularly about the incident, referring to their informant.

In November 1972, President Nixon won the presidential election.

In 1973, the publications of The Washington Post and other media, as well as irritation of the public made the US Senate to draw attention to Watergate. In early 1973, the Senate created a special committee tasked with the investigation of all circumstances of the case and the possible involvement of the staff and the administration of President Richard Nixon. Despite the President and his entourage’s efforts, the investigation could not be stopped.

The investigation revealed that the White House created a group to spies to spy on their opponents for the money of election headquarters of President Nixon. The group was supported by and collaborated with the CIA.

In January 1973, the trial of hackers who got into the Watergate began. 21 people, among whom were the closest advisers of President Nixon, the US Attorney General and Financial Director of the Nixon election campaign were found guilty.

In April 1973, the head of the Office of Presidential Affairs Bob Heldeman resigned, as well as presidential adviser on internal policy John Erlikhman and US Attorney General Richard Kleyndinst. At the end of 1974, all three were found guilty of conspiracy. They were all sentenced to prison.

In July 1973, the Senate committee found out that in the White House all conversations with Nixon were recorded, including those directly related to the incident in the hotel complex of Watergate.

On February 6, 1974 US House of Representatives decided to initiate the procedure of impeachment of Nixon. Nixon refused to bring to the investigation records he had.

On August 5, 1974 Nixon unveiled a few records, which made it clear that Nixon was involved in the concealment of crimes and for two years had lied about his ignorance. On August 8, 1974, Nixon announced his resignation.
