The Comparison of Oedipus and Odysseus

The universe of the literature contains a large amount of heroes that have some similar destinies and characters. Oedipus and Odysseus are not exceptions. The first character is the man hero of Sophocles’ epic poem called “Oedipus the King”. The second one leads the plot of the single-named poem “The Odyssey” written by Homer. The authors are both from Greece. Maybe that is the main reason why the characters are so similar.

The first similarity hides in the conflict that begins both poems. Before Calypso began held Odysseus captive, his country was in a war that had lasted long twenty years. As for Oedipus the King, a wild plaque evaded his native place and killed a huge amount of people.

Besides, both characters were reputable leaders and saviors. Odysseus came back home and stopped the war. Oedipus solved the Sphinx’s riddle and got the crown as a result. Moreover, we may see strong wives in both cases. Penelope controlled all the events that happened in her country. Jocasta also ruled her kingdom and calmed her husband down when he heard accusation in murder.

Pay attention to the gods that ruled people like puppets in each poem. Every human being’s move and every natural phenomenon were explained by the gods’ will who puzzled the characters’ life routes. Dramatic irony embraced the entire poems and filled the plot with a broad array of strong emotions, called suspense.

However, there are some differences in poems too. Odysseus suffered by himself after he blinded the god’s son Cyclops. Oedipus did not suffer after he killed his father and married his own mother. These were his people who received the punishment. Finally, both poems have different ends.

The last thing that I can say about the poem is that both of them made a huge contribution to the literary development.
