The Factors Affecting Insomia

Chronic lack of sleep is the problem that affects a lot of people. Doctor’s analyses of sleep disorders distinguish: transient insomnia (a few sleepless nights), short-term insomnia ( 6 to 8 weeks) and chronic insomnia (occurring for years).

Recent studies of insomnia problems proved that in most cases it is not just an only symptom but a group of symptoms. They are often a result of a physical or psychological pathology.

A lot of factors can result in sleep disturbance: drugs consumption, certain behaviors and reactions, overdrinking of caffeine-containing beverages, alcohol intake or smoking, varying from night to night bedtimes, changing work shifts, worries, anxiety are other lifestyle factors.

Several studies confirmed that the quality of life of the people with insomnia is significantly reduced. It affects many parameters of their emotional, mental and physical health, they have lower indexes according to the initial medical cognitive scale, higher level of absenteeism at work and low productivity. Those who describe sleep disorders in addition to the initial symptom, the probability of re-reference to the emergency department is higher. There is also a higher incidence of falls of elderly people with sleep disorders, particularly women.

Insomnia is frequently a complicating factor in people suffering from depression. Their coexistence is very common and in a more severe forms of depression show high rates of suicide, violence and patient's less susceptibility to treatment.

Numerous difficulties are associated with the study of insomnia but all registered facts demonstrate its relationship with other disorders and risks for the body. More recent studies demonstrated that people with insomnia were treated in the health care establishments more often than those who did not suffer from it.

Several years ago an American physician and scientist Wallace B. Mendelson began to study sleep disorders in dependence on the measure of longevity and human productivity. He revealed an interesting pattern. Among those employees who were still working in the bank there had been 2 times less complaints of insomnia at the time of their hiring. Those who were fired during those two years had frequent sleep abnormalities.

These conclusions are similar to earlier research of military personnel. Navy recruits who complained of sleep disturbances during recruitment had higher reduction targets, less chance of moving up the career ladder and a greater number of hospital days.
