Culture shock and its attributes

Culture shock is a social phenomenon, familiar to anyone who has ever lived abroad as more, than just a tourist. Naturally, it does not occur right after the plane lands in a foreign country. At that point, the novelty of everything you experience is nothing more than a mere excitement.

At first, it does not distract you from your daily activities – you start getting tranquil and happy at your new home, find new favorite coffee shops for cozy afternoon breaks, start meeting locals who fascinate you and yet are nice enough so that soon you find yourself surrounded by their bubbling presence at times when you least expect them, and yet you totally relish these moments.

It’s when the buoyant euphoria of being new to the location slowly evaporates, when you feel the quiet crawl of the culture shock coming closer to you. Suddenly everything new you have been enjoying for months turns into something you cannot stand. There are different types of culture shock. They might be caused by cultural differences in food, style, but most often in behavior.

For example, in Eastern cultures it usually takes time for someone to call you a friend, but in many Western countries ‘friend’ can often mean an acquaintance. Many students who study abroad are first excited by the amiability of their classmates, but notice that is it’s really hard to establish real friendships. They suddenly feel that their friends back home are much more reliable, and this feeling is further worsened by the feeling of homesickness. When mixed together these two can cause a significant damage to the experiences the person is having abroad.

Homesick people often feel that meals from their home country are much better than whatever food is being sold in the supermarkets of their host country. That can happen, even if a month ago the new food was only another reason for enthusiasm.

People in such state are annoyed by even small disparities between the two countries. They start spending more time online or on the phone, contacting their family, or watching old pictures in the wave of nostalgia. Culture shock is obviously caused by the fact that whatever was normal in person’s understanding is suddenly not normal in the new circumstances.

But regardless of its cause, culture shock should not be ignored. People in a state of culture shock must remember about the relativity of everything they experience. They need to realize that each country is normal with its pluses and minuses, and differences should be embraced rather than become a point of estrangement.

Culture shock is a social phenomenon, familiar to anyone who has ever lived abroad as more, than just a tourist. Naturally, it does not occur right after the plane lands in a foreign country. At that point, the novelty of everything you experience is nothing more than a mere excitement.
