Behind the Witchcraft Trials

The term inquisition was a well-known one in Eastern Europe a few centuries ago. In middle ages there were even some inquisitor-squads whose purpose was to seek and adjudicate people they called ‘witches’. The main idea of the inquisition itself was to wipe out any manifestations of the false faith. Those inquisitors often were Catholic priests. Everybody back then believed in an indisputable power of church. It was a great sin to be a heretic. That’s why anything an inquisitor could say was believed to be a God’s will. The most common sentence of the inquisition was witchcraft. It means any involvement in the heresy. The chastisement was usually to be burned at the bonfire.

Only many years after people started to realize that it hadn’t been actually justly to burn someone because of any sort of heresy. Moreover, nowadays we are trying to deny the capital punishment at all. The most substantial idea of such denial is that nobody can take another man’s life. But, back to the years of inquisition, the value of life wasn’t believed to be so significant.

Also, the main problem of the inquisition is prejudice. It is rather difficult to describe the actual guilt of someone who was proclaimed as witch. So, today we can easily understand that all the people, who were executed due to the heresy, were not guilty at all. This also means that inquisitors were punishing only those who were unpleasant for the church or for the crowd. Moreover, it was an easy way to control crowds by killing somebody. It was like: “Look, he denied our canons! That is why we burn him to death!” This way the church could have an undeniable rightness to do whatever it wanted.

So, behind the witchcraft trials there was only a human will to have the power. What is also interesting is that crowds did enjoyed watching those executions. When somebody was on such deadly trial, people from all over the city were gathering on the central square to observe. The reason of such cruelty is actually simple. There were no attractions for citizens of the medieval town at all. So, executions were a good way to chill out.

Today it is hard to realize how the humanity could be so cruel. However, the inquisition is just a part of our history. We only need to learn a valuable lesson from this: no life should be taken for judgment by a man. And we also need to remember that it doesn’t matter what another man believes in. It is his incontrovertible right to do so.
