The Napoleon's Retreat from Moscow

Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow in 1812 is still considered a major military defeat of France. October 19 became a final day of the great French Army which was caused mainly by General Frost.

Napoleon the Great led his army of 442 thousand soldiers against Russia on June 24. Previously his corps counted 600 000 people of different nationalities. Only 100 000 reached the Kremlin in September.

On 7, September the Russians opposed at the bloody battle of Borodino and retreated. A week later Napoleon entered Moscow. But he did not enjoy the fruit of the victory. Shortly a disastrous conflagration started and destroyed the most of the capital. Napoleon stayed there until 19 October and then began his retreat. The early winter suddenly descended upon the country and it became colder and colder. Lack of food and clothes made the army suffer and the icy blasts roared across the endless steppes. Only 10 thousand people crossed the border of their country in mid-December. Losses in Napoleon's legion during 6 months of its military operations amounted to 98%.

What caused such a terrible defeat? Obviously, the main reason was the weather conditions. Napoleon defeated, being imprisoned on St. Helena island, shared the memories of the war in Russia and his views on his defeat.

The former Commander-in-Chief wrote that God himself had helped Russia to win. It was a manifestation of Divine Power that happened that year and incredibly strong frosts came so early. The leader of the invincible French army emphasized that weather and temperature conditions in the Russian latitudes had been carefully studied by his scientists. Frost had to come three weeks later! Incredible frost killed all the horses. It simply did not allow the soldiers to conduct military and intelligence operations and be on patrol at the borders. People just died from hypothermia.

Napoleon also marked that the tactics of the Russians to burn everything so no resources would get to their enemy was a fatal blow to his army. Roads, or rather the complete lack of them in Russia, had also cintributed to the victory of the Russian Empire. Undefeated before, the army stuck in impassable swamps which were formed at even a little rain.

In battles there is no guaranteed victory to the one who knows the perfect strategy of warfare.

Many Russian and foreign authors glorified the Russian victory in their works. The most exhaustive narrative of that campaign was given by Leo Tolstoy in 1869 when he published "War and Peace".
