Useful Tips on How to Start Writing a Research Paper

If you need to write a research paper, in the article you will find useful recommendation on how to start writing a research paper.

What Is a Research Paper and How to Start Writing a Research Paper?

Scientific articles are written by students, graduate students, and scholars. Publication of scientific papers is a mandatory part of the work on the dissertation. After reading the article you will find answers to basic questions that arise when writing a scientific article, like how to start writing a research paper.

First of all, let’s define what a research (scientific) paper is. Research article examines one or more interrelated problems of a particular topic. It can be said that a scientific article is a full-fledged mini-study on a particular narrow topic.

There are several types of scientific articles:

  • Scientific theory papers.
These papers describe the results of studies carried out on the basis of theoretical research, and explanations of phenomena and their laws.
  • Scientific-practical (empirical) papers.
These papers are based on the experiments and real experience.
  • Survey papers.
These papers are devoted to the analysis of scientific achievements in a particular area over the past few years.

Research articles involve the presentation of your own findings and the intermediate or final results of your research, experimental or analytical work. Such an article should contain the author’s development, conclusions, and recommendations.

This means that, first of all, a scientific paper should have the effect of novelty. The conclusions of a research article should not have been previously published. By publishing a scientific article, the author establishes the priority in the chosen field of study.

Guide on How to Start Writing a Research Paper

The first step is always the most difficult. Even if you are a scientist and want to share the results of your discovery you might have a lot of question when starting an article, like how to start writing a research paper, what language to use, what volume it should be, etc.

If you’re preparing a paper for the certain edition of magazine or collection, at first, you should study the requirements of the edition on what articles they accept (the length of papers, their format, and range of topics).

Then you can think on the theme of the paper. In the beginning, revise the material you have and think about how you can use it to write an article. The more narrow and specialized the subject of the article, the better. Do not try to grasp the immensity. The topic of the paper must be relevant to science and interesting to you.

After deciding on the theme of your research article, make an approximate plan of the article, think about how and in what order to present the material. Then think about what materials you do not have to make full and reasoned conclusions.

Go to the laboratory, archives, library to collect the missing information and conduct additional experiments. Be sure to pay attention to new publications on your topic that appeared in the last year or two. Browse through scientific journals, conference collections, magazines, and newspapers. The content of the article should be relevant and based on the latest works of other researchers.

After gathering the necessary material, group it, analyze it, and summarize it. For a better perception of the scope of your work and the results of your activities present the material in a visual form: make charts, diagrams, graphs, and tables. This will not only help you organize the information you have, but it will make it easier for your readers to better understand you and use your material in their activities.

Structure of a Research Article

Research article is composed of the following main parts: the title of the article, abstract, keywords, introduction, main part, conclusion (conclusions, analysis, synthesis, and criticism), and literature list.

Let’s look at the features of each of them.

  • Title

Title of the paper should fulfill two objectives: reflect the content of the article and attract the interest of readers. As the text of the article itself, the title is written in scientific style and maximally reflects the content of the paper.

The manuals on how to start writing a research paper say that it is recommended to include in the paper a few keywords related to the subject matter. The title length should not exceed 10-12 words.

Errors in the title:

  • The title of the paper is too general and covers a much wider range of issues than the text of the article. The title should be as specific as possible.
  • The title does not reflect the essence of the issue and misleads the reader.
  • The sensational title. Such titles are good for advertising and news texts, but they are not suitable for scientific papers.

If the issue in your paper is not new and has been repeatedly raised in scientific works, but you are contributing to the development of a theme or considering only certain aspects of the problem, it is possible to start the title with the words: “On the question of...’.

  • Annotation

After the title, there is annotation – is a concise description of the article. The presence of the annotation is not necessary, but desirable. Annotation should be brief, but informative. The recommended size of the annotation is no more than 500 characters, i.e., 4-5 sentences. Annotation contains information about the author/authors of the paper, summarizes the scientific problem, objectives, and main author’s findings in an abbreviated form. It also has the scientific novelty of a paper.

Annotations should not include quotes, well-known facts, and details. It should be written in clear, simple language, with short sentences, and in an impersonal form.

Annotation has two main objectives:

  • It helps the reader navigate the vast amount of information. On the basis of the annotation a potential reader decides whether or not to read the article itself.
  • It is used for searching of information in the automated search engines.

  • Keywords

If you’re wondering how to start writing a research paper, keywords are a kind of a search key to the paper. Bibliographic databases provide a keyword search. Keywords can reflect basic positions, results, and terms of a scientific paper. They should represent a certain value for the expression of the content of the article and for its search. In addition to concepts that reflect the main theme of the article, use the concepts that reflect a side issue. You can use single words and phrases as keywords of a scientific paper. Usually it is sufficient to choose 5-10 keywords.

  • Introduction

The introduction should introduce the subject and the object of research, research methods you use in a paper, and formulate a hypothesis. You can also mention the results of work of predecessors, what has been found and what requires clarification. You can also give references to previous studies for immersion in the subject.

  • Main Part

The main part is the most extensive and important section of a scientific article. According to the manuals on how to start writing a research paper, the main part should gradually reveal the research process, set out the arguments that led to the findings. If the paper is written on the basis of results of experiments, you need to describe these experiments in details, reflect the stages and the intermediate results. If some experiments have been unsuccessful, they should be to described too, revealing the conditions that influenced the unsuccessful outcome, and methods of elimination of deficiencies.

All studies should be presented in the visual form. Charts, tables, graphs, models, formulas, pictures, and tables are relevant here. Tables should have headings, and graphic material should have captions. Each such element must be directly related to the text of the article; the text of the paper should have a reference to it.

  • Conclusions

This section of a scientific paper contains the main achievements of the author in the thesis form. All conclusions should be objective, published as it is, without the author’s interpretation. This will allow readers to assess the quality of the data and make their own conclusions.

You can also offer your own analysis of the results, as well as present a subjective view of the importance of the work done.

  • Bibliography

This section of a scientific paper provides references to the materials that were cited or mentioned in the text of the work.
