12 O'Clock High

12 O'Clock High is a cult movieon the subject of life of American pilots in II World War. It was made in Los-Angeles in 1949 by director Henry King and represented as memories of main character about his military service in war times.

The protagonist of the movie is Frank Savage, general of US army, which was played by Gregory Peck. During all the film the creators show audience the transformations of this figure under effect of involuntary need to fight and lead. In the beginning Savage is appointed as a commander of 918th Bombing Group and becomes faced with lots its problems. The thing is soldiers of this group have no interest to their duties and are disappointed in army itself. One of the reasons of such an attitude is behavior of their ex-commander, Keith Davenport, whose kindness and gentleness played a trick on his management type. His over-concern about his team caused soldiers’ love and respect, but became a reason of lack of motivation and ambition, attempts to avoid the duties. And when Davenport refuses to punish the soldier, who made an unforgivable mistake, out of pity, he gets removed from management. This situation shows the importance of hard look and stringency under extreme circumstances.

Frank Savage comes to replace Keith Davenport and meets dislike and objections. In comparison with soft and over-caring ex-commander soldiers see him harsh and refuse to follow his orders. It even comes to massive applications for transfer to another group, and Savage has ten days to give life to his plan. Day after day he implements his ideas proving the right to be general in a word and deed. And one case becomes a turning point. One bad weather day Savage and his group make unapproved flight with no loss. It demonstrates the soldiers his high professionalism, determination and dedication, and causes growth of enthusiasm and motivation. After all he succeeds in earning respect of his team and convinces people not to leave 918th Bombing Group.

However, by the end of the movie audience can observe Frank Savage gradually losing strength to fight and lead. Bereavement of a few crews during a difficult mission in front of his eyes makes a deep wound to his heart. He loses an ability to fly.

This story gives us a lot of instructive examples, and helps to understand human nature as well. Firstly, it shows that in cruel and violent times not only kindness and mercy matter. Vice versa, sometimes you need to be even harsh for common good. And secondly, this movie also illustrates the fragility of the human mind.
