Advertisements and its Effects

Advertisement became so remarkably common that it follows us everywhere without us even noticing it is being presented. We rarely pause during our hasty and rushing days in order to contemplate the effects it might be having on us. Exposure to ads can happen on TV and on the billboards, in the web or at the brochure, some well meaning neighbor left at your doorstep. We look at the words tempting us to buy things without thinking about what is behind their intrigue and glossy colorfulness.

Obviously, advertisement can be of service. It can inform us about the curious events in our city, tell us about dangers of seasonal epidemics, and suggest us an affordable and yet charming destination for our vacation. Without ads we would never realize on what days local supermarkets offer a discount, and when our favorite bistro in the Italian neighborhood is having a ‘50% off pizzas’ weekend.

An impact of such advertisement is usually positive and it leaves the clients with a delightful mood. Information is undoubtedly power, and we only benefit when the presented commercial is of value and answers our demands.

However, fancy displays we encounter daily are not that transparent. Clever marketing strategists are investing time and money in order to figure out where to place flashy banners so that they have the desired effect. It’s their job, after all, to ensure the successful sales of their product.

But simple users rarely benefit from the unwanted exposures of ads, however carefully designed they might be. Frequent encounters with undesired commercials might have an opposite impact. A client becomes annoyed and easily irritated. Even if the need arises to buy the advertised product, he might avoid the vexatious brand on purpose.

Another way commercials can have an impact is by altering our subconsciousness. By constantly being surrounded with displays that call us to buy things, we become tangled in the unending cycle of consumerism. We tend to think that our sole purpose is to earn money to buy products that are being shown to us.

We do so not because we are incapable to control ourselves, but because ads show a happy life that can be achieved exclusively by purchasing the good. We are not acquiring merchandise, we are buying a daydreamy promise of a better life.

In conclusion, one can see that advertisement can have a variety of different impacts. It is utterly up to us to use our heads, when making decisions about presented goods in order not to be deceived by the creativity of the designers.
