The Unsuccessful War on Drugs

Since the usage of some drugs is not any more prohibited in many places, the answer to the question if we lost the war on drugs, becomes obvious.

The latest abatement of drug possession laws in some states proves that there is not much more that is available to be done in terms of winning the battle and making new effective laws work on drug users. Why are we retreating? Why drug consumption is growing and spreading?

That war officially started in 1972 when President Nixon declared the first drug law enforcement and then it was not very strict. Later it was enforced by other laws and acts. The fight reached its peak at the period of Reagan’s and Bush’s administrations. $67 billion was spent in enforcement of strict drug laws. There were really good results and the plan was relatively effective.

Soon it demanded spending too large amounts of money to control the consumption and spreading of illicit drugs in the USA. There came the other side of the coin. The prisons became increasingly overcrowded and a lot of people were labeled as hard criminals after only experimenting with soft drugs. Besides the appearance of medication substances which were not noted in the law restrictions but causing the similar to drug's effects spreaded widely. Abuse of some prescribed pills for health improvement, especially among young people was marked to be on the rise. As it was reported by National Survey on Drug Use and Health a lot of college students intake medicines for nonmedical recreational purposes. No warnings helped that very high doses of some substances develop a dependence on them, similar to forbidden narcotics. So the war on drugs has acquired new direction and new enemies. The results of the first achievements have gone downhill and continuation of war have become very costly for country. A number of solutions are still under experimentation but the epidemics of drug’s intake is not stopped.

Many common people and politicians have decided that legalizing of certain drugs could be the best solution. Though it may become a new plague on society, as tobacco and alcohol, they believe that freedom of choice of every person in this relation is more important. Some authorities feel that rehabilitating of drug users is much cheaper and effective than putting and holding them in prison. The other part of the society is concerned that if strict restrictions and bans on at least supplying and spreading of narcotic substances are not amplified, the results can be unpredictable.

Since the usage of some drugs is not any more prohibited in many places, the answer to the question if we lost the war on drugs, becomes obvious.
