Biography of William Faulkner' life and creativity

William Faulkner is the greatest writer of the USA, masters of new American prose. He is one of American writers, who became the giant of world literature. Based on the spoken language and the American folk tradition, Faulkner combined these elements with literary modernism and the most daring experiments in European symbolism in literature, creating their own immortal masterpieces.

He was born in 1897, in New Albany, and was a senior from four sons and grew in Oxford. Faulkner received a name in honor of the great-grandfather, the colonel William K. Faulkner, the participant of civil war. In 1918, Faulkner joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. However, he couldn’t complete the basic training course because of the end of war. Returning to Oxford, he worked in a New York bookstore. He often changed places of employment and occupation. In 1924, his literary debut took place in "The New Republic" magazine: it was published there his poem "The Day Dream of a Faun" ("L’Apres midi dun faun").

In 1925 Faulkner got acquainted with the writer Sherwood Anderson in New Orleans. He recommended to Faulkner to pay more attention to prose, but not poetry, and advised to write about that Faulkner knows best of all — about the American South, one tiny site of this earth, having the size as a stamp. Faulkner created the Yoknapatawpha saga. A specific place in it was held by the Civil War of 1861-1865. The heroes of the saga were the representatives of such families as the Sartoris de Spain, the Compson, the Snopes, and also there were the other inhabitants of Yoknapatawpha. Turning from work into work, they become old friends, thr real people about whose life you learn something new every time.

Faulkner received his first great recognition after the publication of the novel "The Sound and the Fury", in 1929. After that, he married Estelle Oldham, after her divorce from her first husband. There were two daughters in their family: Alabama and Jill. However, Faulkner's works had generally success in critics, but not in readers, being considered as unusual and difficult. To pay money, Faulkner began to write the scripts for Hollywood, making them for fifteen years (1932-1946). During those years, he created the novels: "Light in August" (1932), "Absalom, Absalom!" (1936), "Unconquered" (1938),"Wild palm trees" (1939),"Small village" (1940) and others, and also a collection of short stories "Go Down, Moses" (1942), where his most famous story "The Bear" was included.

Only the award of the Nobel Prize for 1949 brought to Faulkner the recognition at the homeland.
