A Brief Look Into The Life and Music of John Coltrane

John Coltrane was the single child in his family born on September 23, 1926. His place of birth was Hamlet, North Carolina.

John was growing up in a family fond on music – his dad payed violin, mom – piano. From his early childhood he was surrounded with music that influenced him significantly. John’s grandfather was a pastor and deep devotion to religion was cultivated in John’s heart. At the age of 12 he was presented with a clarinet and spent hours mastering his play. Unfortunately, John’s father died soon and mother made a decision to move to Atlantic City. John stayed with his relatives living in North Caroline where he continued to study music. He made progress and became famous among his classmates and neighbors. It was a difficult time and unemployment level was extremely high. After graduation John and his friends moved in Philadelphia where he lived until 1957. He found a job of laborer in a factory refining sugar and soon was admitted at the Ornstein School of Music. Living in Philadelphia was a good experience for John, he learnt about jazz and blues which were not popular in the South. His heart was totally devoted to music and in 1947 Coltrane joined a jazz band of E. Vinson. It was a rush time in his life – smoking, drinking, heroin addiction were his followers during those years. In couple of years he returned to his mother and started studying at Granoff School of Music to master his saxophone play. In 1955 he married to Naima, his wife and invented a nickname “Trane”.

In 1955 he joined the legendary quintet of Miles Davis but because of his addiction to heroin he was kicked off from the group.

With the help of his mother, wife and religion John managed to get rid of this addiction and his music became furious, spiritual and very special. A lot of famous songs were created at that time: “A Love Supreme,” “My Favorite Things,” “Coltrane Live at Birdland,” and others.

Later John and his pianist’s wife Alice arranged a new group but it didn’t exist for a long time. In 1967 John Coltrane died at the age of 41.

John’s life was short but at the same time extraordinary and full of bright events. His famous sax solo for 45 (!!!) minutes is known all over the world and many art lovers keep in their hearts magic music by John Coltrane.
