Ophelia is one of main characters of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, probably his most mysterious play. She is a daughter of Chief counselor Polonius and prince Hamlet’s beloved. The problem of relationship between Hamlet and her is Ophelia’s ignoble origin: the prince can marry the lady of king birth only. So her family stands against this love, and she is forced to pretend in front of them despite to her belief in the sincerity of prince’s feelings. But after finding out all the truth about his farter’s death Hamlet gets disappointed in women and blames them all and Ophelia too for their weakness and hesitance. For this reason he changes his attitude to girl in spite of the fact that his love was sincere. To facilitate their breakup for himself Hamlet begins to scoff at her and her feelings pretending to be insane, and says that it will be better for her to leave that society she’s the part of and “to go to monastery”. The one more reason of his behavior is that fact that their love can distract him from carrying out revenge which he’s more interested in.
So Ophelia is between the two warring camps. And she is hot strong enough to reject her family because she is humble and obedient daughter of Polonius, fully trusting him her destiny and secrets. She is innocent and unsophisticated girl who does not understand sense and point of the struggle that takes its place in Elsinore. She has no other choice but to believe in beloved’s madness, so she accept the rules of this cruel game imposed by King Claudius and her father Polonius, agreeing to fulfill their ugly orders. But soon Hamlet kills Polonius and it becomes the last straw. Young lady can’t withstand all the heavy blows of destiny that were raining down on her for so long time. These entire worries give rise to her madness which is absolutely real, unlike the prince’s one.
Shakespeare gives us no obvious answer if Ophelia’s death was a suicide or an accident, but in both cases this tragedy is a result of girl’s insanity caused by evil and dismissive attitude of people around from her loved ones to almost strangers.
In the whole play there are only 158 lines that were said by Ophelia, but it did not stop poet to portray all girl’s life. Using this Character Shakespeare shows us world hostility. She is a victim of the world of crimes and lies, intrigues and deceits. She has deep feelings both to Hamlet and Polonius, and her heart breaks because of necessity to make choice between love to man and affection to father.
