20th century Latin America

For several centuries a lot of Latin American countries were in colonial dependence. And all this time they felt some impact of European traditions and culture. The Catholic Church played an important role in this process of impact for the local population and spread the European model of culture and education.

During the XIX century a lot of independent countries in this region were under the great influence of the US. According to the Monroe Doctrine, Americans wanted to avoid strengthening the position of Europeans in Latin America primarily in their markets. But if at the beginning of the XIX century US support indirectly helped Latin Americans to lose the Spanish (and Brazilians - Portuguese) oppression, in the future, this aid turned to financial and economic dominance. This situation is less happy with countries in the region, and especially the most developed countries - Argentina, Mexico and Brazil. However Latin American national bourgeoisie striving for greater autonomy and establish contacts with leading European countries. At the XX century in several Latin American countries (Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and others.) were carried out democratic reforms that helped to form a civil society.

Besides that Latin American states differ from each other in economic and social development. The greatest progress in industrial development reached Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil and Mexico. Here has developed large-scale industry and has increased working class. Capitalist relations penetrated into agriculture.

In another group of countries (Peru, Ecuador and others) there were only mining and manufacturing industry and significant role in the economy played agriculture. The most backward were Haiti, Paraguay a number of territories in the Caribbean. It was the agrarian countries with patriarchal attitudes, the vast majority of the population lived in conditions of poverty and powerlessness.

During the second half of the XX century in a number of Latin American countries leaders attempt to establish socialism and dictatorship. In the 1980s it began the restoration of democratic regimes: in 1980 - in Peru, in 1982 - in Bolivial, Guatemala, Honduras, Uruguay, in 1989 - in El Salvador and Paraguay, in 1985 - in Brazil, in 1990 - in Chile. After that in all countries except Cuba established a democratic system. However this process hasn’t led to an improvement in the economic situation in this region.
