Peace Movements and Effects on Society

Can you imagine how our planet would benefit if there were no wars, weapons and aggression anywhere? It would become just happy instantly! All counties will raise the standards of living, economies will flourish and they will peacefully compete in their achievements. If all superpowers start disarmament and invest all the money for peaceful purposes, there would never be poverty and famine.

Unfortunately not many people think about such possibility. Besides a lot of authoritative people gain great profits from wars and weapons. The movement for peace is not sufficiently sponsored by financial circles. Thus, this movement exists but it is not so strong as the forces of evil and war.

There is no much agreement on what "peace" is. It was a great mistake of humanity that they tried to secure peace fighting the wars. All disagreements were solved via military conflicts and with the use of force. Wars and misunderstanding have become an integral part of different societies. Peace representatives instantly became the traitors of their country and the ”anti-war” fighters were considered as supporters of hostile countries. It was not often clear if a movement or a protest was against a war in general (pacifism) or against a country’s participation in it. Indeed that lack of clarity is often exploited by rabid reactionaries and propaganda.

In the twentieth century our planet was swept by two world wars. The First World War took the lives of 10 million soldiers from 32 countries involved in the confrontation. Military action, destruction, famine, epidemic caused the death of 20 million people.

The Second World War was the largest military conflict in human history. About 80% of the world population of 62 states participated in it. The war killed more than 58 million people!

Children of the survivors of World War II have different view on violent conflict. The second half of the 20th century revived the mass pacifist views. First they started in informal youth circles throughout the United States. Over time more and more people of different ages and outlooks living on different continents joined the movement against military violence and wars.

One of the clearest examples of the activities of the peace movement are the Arab-Israeli peace-making centers where they teach to coexist peacefully the representatives of two warring nations : Jews and Arabs. So, the the world should learn to build small communities where a long time enemies find the way to live without war and champion peace.
