Alexey Brodovitch - the man who formed the face of modern advertising and design

Alexey Brodovitch is the famous photographer and the designer. He is famous for the fact that he changed approach to modern advertising, decoration, design of magazines and much more. As the art director he had been creating the Harper’s Bazaar for 30 years. The fashionable magazine turned into the magazine about lifestyle by the efforts of Brodovitch, and his photographers became the stars.

Alexey Brodovitch was born in Russia in 1898 in a family of well-known doctor. Parents hoped that he would enter the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, but one of the best-known designers of the XX century hadn't graduated. When Alexey was 16 years old, he escaped on the front, but he was immediately returned home and was sent to a military college. After graduating the college, Brodovitch together with his family was immigrated to France in 1920.

Alexey painted the theatrical sceneries in Paris. Thanks to this work he had got acquainted with the art elite of the French capital — Picasso, Matisse, Cocteau and Derain. Behind the scenes, the young man made the first series of "The Russian Ballets" that are considered as classics of the abstract photo now.

In 1924 Brodovitch unexpectedly won a competition for the best design of the poster of a charitable ball of Le Bal Banal declared in favor of poor artists. His work was chosen by organizers from a great number of others, having bypassed also Pablo Picasso's poster. A career of Brodovitch as an applied artist was begun from that moment. He did advertising for such shops as Le Printemps, Bon Marche, Martini, and in 1928 he worked as the artistic director of Aux Trois Quartiers department store.

This experience was very useful in the design of the magazine image of Harper's Bazaar, where Brodovitch was invited in 1934. By that time, he with a family had been lived for four years in America, teaching advertising at school of industrial art at the museum in Philadelphia.

He came to work to Harper’s Bazaar in 1934. He began to publish the work of Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Jean Cocteau in a purely women's magazine. Brodovitch adored the photo. His working day began with selection of photos that assistants printed out in large quantities and of the most different formats. He cut off images, he could turn them from left to right, put on a diagonal or overlay one another, if it was seemed to him that they would look more effectively on the page

In 1958 Brodovitch left Harper’s Bazaar. However, the work had always been the meaning of life for him. Therefore, leaving the magazine, he fell into a deep depression, began to drink, and then went to a psychiatric hospital. Brodovitch could not return to the work he loved.

In 1966 he returned to France, where he died in 1971.
