Learning How to Write a Synthesis Paper: Before Writing the Paper

A paper is a type of work that briefly analyzes, interprets or evaluates a topic. The paper is considered a literary figure, just like poetry, fiction and drama. Basically, there are two different types of synthesis papers:

  • Using a formal tone. Because of this, you need to avoid using humor, sarcasm, colloquial vocabulary, and any irrelevant observations. You need to keep in mind that there is a difference between the spoken word (informal) and the written word (formal); therefore, a written text could be found impersonal and pretentious. Things are written for a reader who, despite being intelligent, might not be totally informed in the subject.

In fact, the fundamental purpose of a paper used in an exam is to demonstrate the insight that the writer might have on the subject that he or she is writing about and transmit it in the most complete way possible.

You need to keep in mind the fact that a paper tends to be judged by three different criteria:

  • Relevant and well-documented content.
  • An appropriate and well-organized argumentation
  • The correct use of language

Summary

A summary is a straight-to-the-point paraphrase of all the main ideas in a paper. You need to quote the author and the title, generally in the first phrase, which will also contain the thesis of the paper and all backup ideas and material; you can use a direct quote of the most powerful or straight-to-the-point declarations of the author(s).

Read the document or the source information about the topic that concerns you, and do it one paragraph after another. Then highlight the words and sentences that you think express the main idea of the text and after you go through the whole thing, go to the words you just highlighted and write a phrase that – to you – represents the main idea of the whole thing.

Writing the Paper

There are certain steps you should follow to write a paper, starting with selecting and limiting the subject or source document you will be writing about. In order to begin the search for information that might sustain the theory of your paper, you need to:

  • Look for sources: selecting texts, sources and material that will let you start the documentation stage of the work.
  • Highlighting: This is done by locating the main ideas of the authors; this is what we normally call a summary, which will allow you to argue the paper´s context or literal quotes.
  • Analysis: This is all about classifying information, ordering it and understanding it.
  • Synthesis: This is the most important part; it consists of being aware of how to express the ideas of the authors with your own words. Aside from the steps to follow, there is a specific structure that is necessary when learning how to write a synthesis paper. According to this structure, the paper must have this specific structure:

  • Introduction: This is the part of the paper where you need to establish the objective of the paper. Here you explain the content, and the subtopics you will be addressing as well as the criteria that you have applied in the text. The introduction will be 10% of the paper and it should be about half a page long. The specific objective of the introduction is to capture the attention of the readers.
  • Development: This part contains the exposition and the analysis of the synthesis paper. This part should be about 1'% of the paper, and it should be about one page long.
  • Bibliography: In the final part of the paper you need to write references to the sources you consulted which were useful both for gathering information and for sustaining your ideas or your criticism. These sources can be books, magazines, the internet, interviews, television shows, videos, etc.

After Writing the Paper

Once you are done with the paper you need to proofread it. keep in mind that this proofreading has two vital steps; The first revision is about you observing the content you wrote and the organization of the paper itself. The purpose of this is to see if the paper actually does communicate its purpose to the reader and if every part of it has coherence. For the second proofreading, you need to pay attention to the grammatical aspect of the paper, especially punctuation, and spelling in general.

Logic is crucial in a paper and achieving it is something much simpler than it seems. Logic depends only on the organization of the ideas and on how you present the same ideas. In order to convince the reader that there is a need to proceed in an organized way from formal explanations to hard evidence, meaning, from fact to conclusion. To achieve this, the writer can use two different logics: either the inductive logic or the deductive logic. According to the inductive logic, the writer begins by showing specific and concrete examples and afterward, using them to draw general statements. To succeed, you must not only choose well your examples but should also present a clear explanation at the end. The advantage of this method is that the reader is actively involved in the process of reasoning and therefore it is easier to be convincing.

According to the deductive logic, the writer starts the paper by showing general statements, which will be documented progressively through concrete examples. To succeed, the thesis writer must explain very clearly and then must use transitions for readers to follow the logic/reasoning developed in the thesis. The advantage of this method is that if the reader supports the general statement and the arguments are well constructed, the findings are generally accepted.

After taking care of proofreading and setting the style of your paper, you need to quote your sources. For many papers, this will mean taking notes so you can quote the sources as footnotes, aside from the normal bibliography at the end of the paper. Footnotes and text quotes should be used for any kind of material that you are mentioning, paraphrasing, or quoting. If you are writing this paper for an exam or something of that sort, you should not use a specific style to quote, but you will need to mention which of your sources you used after you quote it.

After this, and when everything else is ready, you title your paper. It is important that the title you have chosen expresses the view you have put in your thesis statement and the arguments that support it.
