At the time following World War One a new means of thinking became prominent. This new notion is that which we call Modernism. After the war it was realized that lots of people had endured complete horrors, ones that they never could've envisioned, or ever forget. The violence and pain witnessed by so many left them psychologically shell-shocked, and filled with disillusionment. These psychological consequences would soon alter the entire world for a long time to come, and cause many to a loss in religion and questioning of what they once believed accurate. A number of the societal normalities these folks had before they left for war, had been abandoned. People exchanged their appropriate ways for more relaxed ideals. In this new society people were more able to express themselves, the way they needed to. Among the greatest shifts that happened in this new era was with women. Before World War One, women were believed submissive to men. They didn't have duties outside of daily house work, as well as kids. However after World War Some folks returned to women who'd taken on more manly characters. In The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway uses women to show these battles of society.
