Core Competencies From the clinical setting you will find clinical and non-clinical complex roles. A clinical advanced nursing function is one that involves direct patient care. A good example of this is a nurse practitioner who provides treatment for patients and clinical testing. A non-clinical complex nursing role is one that does not provide direct services to your patients. Examples of this include nurse educators and nurse administrators who don't provide direct treatment to those patients. Both the non-clinical advanced functions have core competencies unique to their specialties. Non-Clinical Advanced Roles The competencies of the nurse educator unite the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of nurse teachers (National League for Nursing, 2013). There are eight core competencies of the nurse educator: ease learning, ease learner development and socialization, use assessment and evaluation approaches, participate in curriculum design and evaluation of program results, function as a change agent and leader, pursue continuous excellent improvement in the nurse educator role, engage in scholarship and function within the academic environment ("Core Competencies of Nurse Educator," 2005).
