The Use of a Portfolio to Evaluate Students in Math and Science For a young child, going off to college could be a very intimidating experience. Thoughts of if the other children will like them, if they will have sufficient money to buy an ice cream at lunch, or when they'll have assignments that night interrupts their heads. But a major portion of schooling is testing, and lots of kids freeze once they hear that word. Consider yourself at a testing scenario then imagine what it is like for a young child to feel this defeating anxiety. That is why I am informing you, as fellow committee members, teachers, and students alike, of these ideas for assessing children in science and mathematics. I hope you will all take the opportunity to consider these various procedures, and possibly agree on a means to assess our children from the classroom, and finally present these thoughts to the school board to be turned on. As teachers of math and science, how we must stop and ask ourselves exactly what it is we wish to achieve within our classroom. Is it most important for the child to get the ideal response, or are you worried about how he or she receives the answer? Granted, we're striving for the correct answer, but sometimes numbers are added incorrectly, information is written incorrect, or a child's handwriting is misread. As for me, I feel it is the procedure the student uses to get to the answer that is critical, whether it is right or wrong.
