The Crucible John Proctor In the book The Crucible there is a battle within to have one have a feeling of belonging to society. They want to be loved by that society however much they might seem that they don't belong. But they do need to demonstrate that to everyone, everyone that might not feel that. John Proctor is a good illustration of a battle to discover a place in society. He's the kind of person that wants to ditch his fields about the good days even when the good day is simply on Sunday of that week. His battle to create a living together with his crops puts him into trouble with the very religious Puritan community of Salem Massachusetts. John Proctor only got involved with this entire witch trial because of a girl by the name of Abigail Williams. If it was not for her falling in love with John afterward he would not be placed on trial for something. Abigail got him engaged with all the witch trials since John wanted to return to his wife and he did not want Abigail in his own life in any respect. After Abigail came to his life he began not believing in himself. He had been struggling in existence and with this particular family life. He tries to ignore the events at Salem but when Mary Warren announces that she is an official of the court and also that Elizabeth Proctor has been mentioned.
