In The Wife of His Youth by Charles Chesnutt, he shows many predicaments of post-emancipation life. One of these predicaments is the social standing of freedmen when compared with white men left room for advancement and made it difficult for them to endure. The freedmen were illiterate and not utilised to being out on their own, as as a slave all they needed to do was work at the areas. They were still seen as inferior, but had little to no jobs to provide cash for the essentials in life. Another predicament shown in the story was how when they were slaves they had been sold to various farm owners and separated from their family members and people they care about. This caused many of them to look for years when they were released, together with the hope that they would one day find their nearest and dearest. Post-emancipation life was just as terrible for the folks of “mixed blood” since they were more black than white, although not approved by whites.
