Through The Joy Luck Club Amy Tan illuminates various conflicts betweens mothers and daughters. The majority of these relationships, already quite brittle, become distanced through heritage, history and expectations. These differences cause reoccurring clashes involving two particular mother-daughter bonds. The very first relationship exists between Waverly Jong along with her mum, Lindo. Lindo tries to instill Chinese attributes inside her daughter while Waverly won't recognize her legacy and concentrates on American culture. The second bond is that of Jing-Mei Woo along with also her mother, Suyuan. In the start of the book Jing-Mei speaks of confusion in her recently deceased mother's action. The cultural and language barrier introduced between Jing-Mei and Suyuan is strong enough to cause constant separation and misunderstanding. The initial and most significant conflict in the book is heritage. Both mothers, Suyuan and Lindo, come from a Chinese history and attempt to instill their wisdom and strengths into their children. However, their kids are being raised in America with new ideals and a powerful freedom that both mothers never experienced. Both contrasting cultures pose a scenario where both affects cause great confusion and disturbance from relationships. "How can she thing she is able to mix in? Just her skin and her hair are all Chinese. InsideВ--she is all American-made. It is my fault she's the way. I wanted my kids to get the ideal mix: American circumstances and Chinese character.
