Dramatic Tension in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls An Inspector Calls has been written in 1946, many decades following the conclusion of World War One and only after World War Two. No matter how the true drama goes in 1912; before World War one and just before the start of voyage of The Titanic. Furthermore at the time of spring 1912, most people didn't dread of German resistance, as there appeared to be no chance that Britain would intervene; plus they'd all justified that the Titanic was unsinkable. The simple fact that the story is set in this phase is significant because it is the foundation for most of the irony that occurs in the story. This shows just how naïve and ironic Mr. Birlings speeches really are. Nevertheless Mr. Birling will demonstrate the doctrine of the majority of people in the Victorian age; unfounded and based predominantly on people own understanding of the situation. The play starts of with a very typical Victorian setting. Mr. and Mrs. Birling, their daughter Shelia, their son Eric and Gerald Croft; Shelia's dress to be are all seated around a massive table celebrating the participation of Shelia together with Gerald. The Audience are able to distinguish that the Birling family is really quite wealthy from descriptions which are found in the stage directions and objects that are cited in the text. The family reside in a 'rather large suburban home' which belongs to some 'prosperous manufacturer' This proves that the household is rich and the head of the household is 'flourishing'. 'good solid furniture' is believed to be current. In the time of this atmosphere, to really have a fireplace and also a phone was considered quite lucky and only the ownership of wealthy.
