In recent years our society has experienced many tragic school shootings in which adolescents have committed heinous crimes for no apparent reason. The question has become who's to blame or that which inspired these strikes on these innocent victims? This question has become an epidemic in our country. We live in a violent universe and young people have easy access to it whether it is on television, in music or on the Internet. But with the explosion of media entertainment in the last several years, video games have come under scrutiny as to whether or not violence in video games numbs kids and teens to the consequences of real life violence. The answer to this question is yes. Young children and teens are very easily influenced, particularly in a society in which violence, whether fictional or real, thrives. Video-game violence has become a common connection in tragedies, for example Columbine. The material of video games desensitizes a youthful person to the consequences of real violence. Although there are lots of critics who affirm the concept that video game violence does desensitize youths, in addition, there are people who oppose this view. A good instance of that comes from video game designer, Greg Costikyan. He wrote, "Violence is a prominent subject in video games and a few have depicted violence in primitive and ugly manners. The first person shooter games that do center around violence actually benefit society since they give young men a way to port their antisocial impulses without hurting anybody" (Costikyan 245).
