Short Paper Assignment 2 During this article "The Code of the Streets," Elijah Anderson describes the differences between "adequate" and "street" people which can be applied to the approaches of social management, tagging, and social conflict notions when talking about the violence among inner cities because of cultural adaptations. Anderson's theory examined African Americans residing in America's inner cities that are driven to follow the "road code" and function to keep respect, devotion, and their own self-image. The "street code" Anderson is referring to will be "a cultural adaptation" that is the cause of violent crime in America's inner cities (Anderson Article PDF, 3). Since these people live in mainly impoverished areas with easy accessibility to firearms and drugs, in addition to elevated levels of violence and crime, "everybody feels isolated and alienated from the rest of America" (Vold, 187). Anderson has been differentiate between "respectable" individuals and "street people." Those who are "adequate" families reside in accordance with a "civil code" that upholds values in contrast with the remainder of society for example maintaining a job, obtaining an education, protecting their children and following the law. Additionally, "road" families tend to fend off for themselves, particularly when young, develop without adult supervision and are often abused. This alone causes a dangerous surroundings because children then, "learn it to address any sort of social problem one must quickly resort to hitting or other violent behavior" (Anderson Article PDF, 5).
