While there are lots of incidents of successful personnel recovery listed throughout history, the retrieval of Air Force Captain (CPT) Scott O’Grady through the Bosnian War presents an interesting study. CPT O’Grady's personal conduct as a consequence of his coaching greatly increased his odds of being recovered. Furthermore, the units included with eliminating CPT O’Grady in the battlefield operated in a nearly textbook fashion. History In late 1992, as a result of the split of Yugoslavia, the Bosnian War began between different ethnic factions of both Croatians, Serbians and Bosnians. The United States, as a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), also provided air power to the United Nations (UN) below Operation Deny Flight.1 This surgery meant to preclude the opposing factions from using air assets for bulk destruction of the enemies. The United Nations placed military sanctions against the warring factions from the Bosnian war. In reaction, the United States Air Force as part of NATO triggered the 555th Fighter Squadron of the 31st Fighter Wing based in Aviano, Italy.2 Fighter resources traveled throughout the Adriatic Sea to run combat air patrols over the exerted no soar place.
