Deception binds the characters from the Joy Luck Club together. In the Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan depicts deception at virtually every turn from the novel. Mothers often help their brothers through misleading comments; husbands hide secrets out of their wives through deceptive acts. Even best friends deceive each other as they fight for one reason or the other. Through the narrative, deception is an useful instrument for parenting; for attempting to help keep marriages together, or maintaining friendships. From time to time, it develops out of control from a benign lecture to a life changing scam. Deception is a powerful parenting tool. Maternal deception exists throughout the book because the mothers and grandmothers direct their daughters to happiness through deceptive stories, and warnings to brighten their daughters’ future. This is very evident in the relationship between Waverly and her mum Lindo Jong. Earlier, Lindo learns that Waverly already covertly participated with her fiancé Rich, but pretends not to know. She did not work on it so she could have an untainted opinion on whether Rich is a good husband for Waverly. This works well for Waverly, also as Waverly place, “I came up with a brilliant plan. I concocted a way for Rich to meet my mom and also win her over” (Amy Tan 194). Lots of family friends come around to have dinner in Lindo’s house. Throughout the supper, Waverly presents Rich into Lindo, and Lindo wastes no time as “she scrutinized him from head to toe, checking her appraisal of him” (Tan 195-196) After Waverly asks Lindo of her view regarding Rich, her only comment is about his freckles. In the end, it turns out that the arbitrary comment usually means that she's fine with him, but it will deceive Waverly which Lindo may not enjoy Rich. Lindo appears.
