Perhaps you have wondered what is it like to be mad? We often take our mental health for granted, but the book Life of Pi as well as the film Shutter Island inspire us to look deeper inside ourselves and to truly be grateful for the fact that we--many people--are mentally stable. That is just 1 idea that these two functions research. What are they just about though? Life of Pi, a novel by Yann Martel printed in 2001, is about a sixteen-year-old Indian boy called Piscine Molitor Patel who underwent a horrendous shipwreck. Shutter Island, a movie directed by Martin Scorsese from 2010, on the other hand, is all about a guy named Andrew Laeddis who experienced his very own traumatic event. Both of these works touch upon the notions of alter ego, the juxtaposition between fantasy and reality, and sanity, as was previously stated. Two of those ideas are similar between the novel and the movie while among them differs between both works. We can now go into greater detail for each of the topics. The first theme that is common to the Life of Core and Shutter Island is that the theme of change ego. Both of the principal characters in each work created an alter ego to their own. In Life of Pi, Piscine's alter ego was a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, who dwelt in the Pondicherry Zoo that Piscine's father ran prior to the Patel family decided to move to Canada. This was not evident throughout the course of this novel, however, it became clear to the readers in the very end of the novel if Piscine, also known as Pi, conversed with officials in the Maritime Department in the Japanese Ministry of Transport.
