Introduction The city of Los Alamos is located in north-central New Mexico approximately 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe. It was established in 1943 as the designated site for the development of the first nuclear weapon along with the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The city sits beneath the Pajarito Plateauas well as the area is located in a Intricate geologic setting with the Jemez Mountains and Valles Caldera to the west and the Rio Grande River Valley to the shore. Land formations of the area are characterized by "alternating mesas and canyons underlain chiefly by Early Pleistocene ignimbrites of the Bandelier Tuff" (Reneau, 2000). The plant and climate of the area varies with seasonality and topographic relief. Various environmental and anthropologic studies have been done in the area resulting in a plethora of information about the natural history of the area. Several Factors such as climate, geology, vegetation, and topography have led to geomorphic formations along with the vast array of lands in the region. The goal of this project is to describe a soil profile associated with a geomorphic surface located within the boundaries of Los Alamos County, that has been subjected to natural and anthropogenic elements, utilizing soil properties and the knowledge and techniques we've gained throughout the term. In addition to describing the soil profile, we will try to translate and justify our results with studies (e.g., Watt, 1996; Reneau McFadden et al., 1996) done in the area of our land profile. In order to acquire a better understanding of the factors which might have contributed into the soil formation and resulting morphological properties, insight to the natural history of this area can also be p.. .
