The Hidden Identity of Arnold Buddy The world is full of people who portray themselves as somebody or something else. People usually hide their identity to obtain things which they need. It is not uncommon to be fooled by a person's appearance. In Joyce Carol Oates's, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been," Arnold Friend is a good example of someone trying to trick someone else into believing he is something that he's not. In the story, a woman named Connie is confronted by a guy who's trying to persuade her to "sit" together in his car. She had seen this man the night prior to staring her at the driveway in so she was a little fearful that this man was now on her doorstep, and of course she had been alone. He started by favorable requesting to come with him , but afterwards he denied him became threatening to her and her loved ones. She runs to the house full of fear but finds herself not able to call for support. She then walks commanded by a peculiar force and moving with Arnold Friend. Arnold Friend clearly signifies the devil throughout his nonhuman physical traits, his clairvoyant knowledge of Connie, her family, and friends, and his dominant power over her even though she knows he's evil. To begin with, Arnold Buddy has many nonhuman characteristics. The narrative describes Arnold Friends hair by saying, "he'd uttered, shabby black hair that looked crazy as a wig" (Oates 285). Joyce Wegs says in her essay about the story his hair really is a wig suggesting he could be sporting it to pay up his horns (357).
