Within this publication there are 3 major girls Linda, Martha, and Mary Anne. Linda's role is positive yet quite saddening since she in a way has given Tim O'Brien the capability to tell stories so in depth using memories. Mary Anne's role is encouraging since she comes to Vietnam and during the trip she finds herself; she redefines the typical job of women. Martha's role inside this novel could be considered positive because she is maintaining Jimmy Cross's morale however, at the exact same time that it could be negative because she directs him on. So that the role of girls in the publication is quite powerful in a positive manner. Mary Anne is portrayed as the best woman in the publication. She's only seventeen and her high school sweetheart, Mark Fossie, arranges it so that she comes to stay with him for a while in Vietnam. When she first gets there she distracts the boys, which make them feel at home. "The guys genuinely liked her. Out on the court she wore Mick jeans and a black swimsuit top, which the guys appreciated, and also in the evenings she liked to dance to music from Rat's portable tape deck" (95). In the beginning she is pleased with mark, however over time she alters and it reveals her becoming a woman and actually maturing. "In her second week Eddie Diamond instructed her how to disassemble an M-16, just how the various parts worked, and from that point it was a natural progression to learning how to use the weapon" (98).
