In literature, there are plenty of examples of individuals who are positioned in “fantastic” circumstances, which served to uncover very much about themselves, as Dostoevsky suggests. Additionally, there are many instances where people breakdown and do something totally uncharacteristic in these same circumstances, as a total consequence of extreme suffering. One particular example, is Gretchen, from Goethe's Faust. She was an ingénue and therefore revealed her true personality at an essential point in her lifestyle.
