The Symbolist movement was initially distinguished in literature (Boston College). It wasn't till later that artwork was approved as Symbolist. Jean Moréas composed the Symbolist Manifesto at 1886 (Boston College). Boston College says, "Symbolism was an idealistic movement, created by artists discontented with their culture."
