In the short tale AN EXCELLENT Man Is Difficult to find, compiled by Flannery O’Connor, the theme that this is of a ‘good guy’ is mystical and flawed is obvious. The reader must recognize that it's difficult to universalize this is of an excellent man because everyone undergoes different experiences. Hence, these encounters affect their viewpoint and subsequently flaw types take on a good guy. O’Connor conveys this theme through her excellent usage of diction, imagery, foreshadowing, and symbolism and also through a innovative usage of repetition and an omniscient viewpoint. The grandmother, the primary character of the tale, is manipulative. Her description of a ‘good guy’ identifies the characteristics a ‘good guy’ should have. She believes that the real definition of an excellent man is usually a southern gentleman: respectful, chivalrous, and courageous when necessary. Right from the start, the reader is provided the indication that the grandmother is set to obtain what she wants and can perform whatever she can to take action. And, from the next line of the complete story, O’Connor shows that anything the grandmother says may have an alternative solution motive. “The grandmother didn’t want to visit Florida. She wished to visit a few of her connections in east Tennessee and she was seizing at every possibility to improve Bailey’s mind” (1284). That is highly relevant to the theme for the reason that a person may have alternate motives, even if they appear to be doing things from an outsider’s perspective selflessly. When the grandmother mentions that she doesn’t want to visit Florida, her son Bailey assumes it’s due to the Misfit killer who has escaped from prison.
