COLD MOUNTAIN Considering that Cold Mountain doesn't heavily rely on dialogue to tell the story, the point of perspective Frazier uses to emphasise that the story is important: He must produce the impact of being wrapped in 2 separate worlds, and provide insight into characters who have no one to examine their thoughts with. The only way to do this is by utilizing the omniscient viewpoint, which will be when the writer has unlimited knowledge regarding the characters and their own ideas. A romantic narrative is especially suited to this sort of narration, since romances revolve not around events, but feelings, which are tough to describe objectively. To fully enjoy the depth of the love between Ada and Inman, the reader needs to be able to peer into the deepest ideas of the characters. Isolation, however, prevents Ada and Inman from showing these ideas to one another or into another character. We instead have to understand from introspections such as the one on pg. 393, when Inman reveals, “he intended to eat nothing before he found Ada. If she would not have him he'd go on into the heights and determine whether the portals on Shining Rocks would receptive into himHe doubted there was a guy in the world more empty than he in the moment.” Intimate secrets like that one are frequent from the publication, and reveal the most details about Ada and Inman’s feelings for each other. This unlimited capacity to notify is used additionally to directly describe Inman and especially Ada; due to the comparative calm of her.
