“AN EXCELLENT Man Is DIFFICULT TO FIND” and “Good Nation People” are two brief stories compiled by Flannery O’Connor during her temporary writing career. Regardless of the literary achievements of O’Connor’s works, she actually is frequently criticized for the grotesqueness of her endings and heroes of her short tales and novels. The grandmother represents the old South incidentally in which she targets her appearnace, manners, and gentile ladylike behavior. O’Connor writes “her collars and cuffs had been organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she experienced pinned a purple spray of fabric violets made up of a sachet. In the event of a major accident, anyone seeing her lifeless on the road would know simultaneously that she was a female”(O’Connor 118). In this short story, “the crazy diproportion of the conditions, the vapid composure that summons up the best violence only to address it as a rare public opportuinty, and the awesome irony with which O’Connor presents the sentence helps it be both fearful and ludicrous”(Asals 132). The irony that O’Connor uses highlights the appalling features of the grandmother’s self-deception that her clothing make her a female and turns it right into a comic matter. Flannery O’Connor would go to great length to provide the reader insight in to the individuals by describing their clothing and attitudes.
